Moscow reacted to the press report that Trump would make Viktor Orbán the UN Secretary-General
Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is technically eligible for the UN Secretary-General position, as the nomination deadline has not passed. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Alimov stated that despite several preliminary votes in the UN Security Council, there are no restrictions on candidates. The US government reportedly supports Orbán's candidacy, encouraging him to run. However, Alimov noted that neither Russia, the US, nor China would officially nominate him. The current Secretary-General António Guterres's term ends on December 31, and the next candidate is expected to come from Latin America or the Caribbean, following an unofficial regional rotation principle. Several candidates have already emerged from these regions, including former ambassadors and ministers.
