Natural burial is gaining popularity: "People increasingly want to become one with nature"

A new natural burial site is being established in the Vinderhoutse Bossen in Ghent, allowing people to bury ashes directly in nature without urns. Funeral director Gerrit Cispa notes a growing interest in eco-friendly burial options, reflecting a trend towards nature-centric farewells. The site differs from traditional cemeteries, as it does not permit urns or memorials, focusing instead on integrating with the natural environment. The first natural burial site in Ghent opened in Drongen in 2021, where interest has also risen. The city has created new paths to enhance accessibility to the site, although space is limited with a cap of 1,250 concessions, with potential for future expansion.
