Even every third grave is unpaid. After years, someone else may rest in it.
In Poland, graves can be reused if the burial fees are not paid, with no set time limit for reuse. There are approximately 15,500 cemeteries, but no central registry exists. Many municipalities charge fees that may be illegal, and a significant percentage of graves remain unpaid. In Poznań, around 30% of graves are unpaid, while in Gdańsk, it's about 7%. Cemetery administrators often remind families of payment deadlines through various methods, including notices and stickers. If fees are not paid, graves may be reused after 20 years, potentially affecting thousands of burial sites.
