The Netherlands turns and votes for the first time not against the American embargo on Cuba

For the first time, the Netherlands abstained from voting against the U.S. trade embargo on Cuba at the UN, alongside Germany and Italy. This shift follows U.S. lobbying efforts and reflects a change in Dutch foreign policy regarding Cuba. The embargo, in place since 1960, has faced criticism for its humanitarian impact. The EU officially opposes the embargo, citing its negative effects on the Cuban people. Despite this, the Netherlands decided to abstain, indicating a departure from its long-standing position against the embargo. The Cuban resolution against the embargo was adopted with 130 votes in favor, highlighting the ongoing international debate around this issue.
