The government is pushing the battery industry, but Hungarian car manufacturers are managing just fine
Despite environmental restrictions on battery factories, Hungarian automotive production continues to grow. The government aimed to position Hungary as a hub for battery manufacturing, but recent fines and operational limits have impacted several plants. Notably, the Semcorp facility in Debrecen has been idle for four months, affecting supply chains for companies like LG Energy Solution. Nevertheless, major automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz are expanding their operations in Hungary, with BMW ramping up production in Debrecen and Mercedes increasing capacity in Kecskemét. The automotive sector is adapting to challenges by sourcing from cheaper locations, while maintaining crucial supplier relationships to support the transition to electric vehicles.
