"We are not in the habit of saying no!" – the CEO of HVG recalled how Ádám Matolcsy threatened him when he inquired about acquiring the newspaper.

On Wednesday, police detained György Matolcsy, former president of the Hungarian National Bank, in connection with a case involving his son, Ádám Matolcsy, who is also wanted internationally. The case relates to a failed company rescue operation linked to the MNB, where it is alleged that Matolcsy attempted to transfer ownership of an investment firm to his son's associates shortly before leaving office. This operation involved significant assets from the MNB's foundation network. The situation has drawn attention to the Matolcsy family's past media ambitions and alleged attempts to influence media narratives in Hungary.
