New York wants to get rid of horse-drawn carriages in Central Park
The New York City Council has voted to ban horse-drawn carriages in Central Park, effective in 2028. This decision follows ongoing debates about animal welfare, intensified after a tragic incident this summer. The proposal received significant support, with 40 votes in favor and only 7 against. Mayor Mamdani's spokesperson confirmed the mayor will sign the bill, emphasizing support for affected workers in the carriage industry. Currently, around 180 horses are used for this purpose, cared for by about 200 owners and employees. While some view the ban as a necessary step for animal rights, others cherish the tradition of horse-drawn carriages as part of the park's history.
