Germany: In many municipalities, the AfD repeats the results of the Nazis from 1933
A study from LMU Munich reveals that support for the far-right AfD in 2025 mirrors that of the Nazi NSDAP in 1933 in over half of German municipalities. The analysis shows significant similarities in voting patterns, with both parties achieving high support in similar regions. Political scientist Kai Arzheimer warns against overgeneralizing these findings, emphasizing that social and cultural conditions drive support for far-right parties. The AfD performs particularly well in rural areas facing economic challenges, especially in eastern Germany, where historical experiences differ from the west. Despite these patterns, the study concludes that historical trends do not dictate future outcomes.
