New European levy makes packages from outside the EU more expensive starting November 1: what does that mean for you?

Starting November 1, a new European handling fee of 2 euros will apply to packages from outside the EU, in addition to the existing 3 euro package tax. This fee is charged per product category and is intended to cover customs handling costs. If an order is placed before November 1 but arrives after, the fee will still apply, but platforms cannot charge consumers additional fees after purchase. The EU implemented these measures to manage the influx of low-cost packages, particularly from China, and has seen a decrease in such shipments since the tax was introduced. The handling fee is permanent and aims to alleviate pressure on customs services.
