New green buffer zone between company Umicore and residential area opened in Hoboken

In Hoboken, the Zilverbos green buffer and a new connecting road have been inaugurated to enhance safety and distance between the Umicore factory and the Moretusburg residential area. The 5-hectare buffer aims to create a natural barrier, while the 2-kilometer road provides a safer route for traffic. Governor Cathy Berx emphasized the project's role in improving local health, as lead levels in children have decreased but remain high near the factory. Umicore acquired 186 homes voluntarily to facilitate this development, which involved collaboration among various stakeholders. The initiative reflects a commitment to balance living and industrial needs.
