New underground high-voltage connection of 38 kilometers between Sint-Truiden and Riemst

Elia is constructing a new 38-kilometer underground high-voltage connection between Brustem in Sint-Truiden and Herderen in Riemst to replace an outdated overhead line. This project aims to enhance the electricity grid's capacity and accommodate the increasing use of renewable energy. The existing overhead line will be upgraded to a full 150,000 volts, doubling transport capacity towards Hasselt. Elia plans to start construction in 2028, with the connection expected to be operational by 2032, allowing for the decommissioning of the aging 70,000-volt line.
