"Novaïa Gazeta": the Nobel committee calls on Russia "to end the repression"

The Norwegian Nobel Committee expressed deep concern over the closure of Novaya Gazeta, a key independent newspaper in Russia, emphasizing its impact on freedom of expression. The committee urged Russian authorities to halt the repression of independent media and civil society. Novaya Gazeta had faced increasing hostility since opposing the war in Ukraine, ceasing print publication in March 2022 but continuing online. Dmitry Muratov, the newspaper's former editor and Nobel laureate, described the closure as part of a broader Kremlin campaign against dissent, highlighting the ongoing threat to Russian constitutional rights.
