Novaya Gazeta, independent Russian newspaper, will close due to "pressure from the security services"
The independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta announced its closure on November 9, citing pressure from Russian security services as the main reason. It was one of the few media outlets resisting Kremlin control, having its license revoked in 2022 after the Ukraine invasion. Editor Sergei Sokolov stated that the closure was a coordinated action by state repression, with all resources blocked and many staff forced to leave the country. He highlighted the historical violence against its journalists, including the murder of Anna Politkovskaya. The newspaper criticized the destruction of justice and the law in Russia, claiming that having convictions is now seen as treason.
