New air passenger rights. Easier compensation, fewer additional fees
After nearly 13 years of negotiations, the EU has adopted amendments to Regulation No. 261/2004, enhancing passenger rights in cases of flight delays, cancellations, and boarding denials. The new rules aim to simplify claims processes and reduce additional fees charged by airlines. Passengers retain the right to compensation ranging from €250 to €600 for delays of three hours or more, with a nine-month window to claim. Airlines must inform passengers of their rights within 96 hours of a delay. New provisions also eliminate extra fees for printing boarding passes and allow for one free correction of passenger names. However, some changes, like a cap on hotel accommodations during disruptions, may not favor travelers. The regulation will take effect in October 2027 after a transitional period.
