New "king" among mushrooms. A true giant discovered in China

Dianjunus rex, a newly discovered fungus, emerged after the extinction of dinosaurs, thriving in post-catastrophe conditions. It belongs to a new family, Dianjunaceae, and features pale, finger-like structures. This species is the largest known ascomycete, surpassing previous records. Found only in China's Yunnan province, its edibility remains unknown. The discovery highlights the vast diversity of fungi, with millions yet to be identified, emphasizing their ecological importance in decomposing organic matter and supporting plant growth.
