New subtype of depression. It is related to the biological clock.
Australian researchers have identified a new subtype of depression called circadian depression, affecting nearly 25% of participants in their study. This subtype is characterized by symptoms such as seasonal mood changes, increased sleep during depressive episodes, and social jet lag. The findings suggest that individuals with this subtype may respond poorly to standard antidepressants like SSRIs and may benefit from therapies targeting circadian rhythms, such as light therapy and melatonin. Additionally, there is a noted genetic link between this subtype and a higher risk of ADHD, indicating distinct biological mechanisms at play. Further research is needed to officially classify circadian depression as a separate subtype.
