Meta was fined an amount equivalent to eight thousand billion forints

Meta, Facebook's parent company, has been ordered to pay a $25 billion fine by a New Mexico court for misleading users regarding data privacy in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The court found that Meta allowed unauthorized access to user data, which was exploited for political campaigns, including the 2016 U.S. presidential election. New Mexico's Attorney General, Raúl Torrez, described the ruling as one of the harshest state judgments against a corporation in U.S. history. The jury determined that 26 out of 29 statements made by Meta were misleading, resulting in over 43 million violations of state consumer protection laws. Meta sought to limit the fine to $3.45 billion, arguing that a larger penalty could drive businesses away from the state.
