Revelations in Gietrzwałd. The Church recognized them after 100 years
The Gietrzwałd apparitions are the only officially recognized Marian apparitions in Poland, occurring from June 27 to September 16, 1877. The visionaries, Justyna Szafryńska and Barbara Samulowska, reported seeing the Virgin Mary, who urged them to pray the rosary and build a chapel. These events significantly impacted Polish identity in the region under Prussian rule, fostering a sense of national consciousness among the local population. The Church officially recognized the apparitions in 1977, and plans are underway to commemorate their 150th anniversary with the construction of 150 chapels. A book detailing these events has also been published, providing historical context.
