Oil companies make huge profits from fossil fuels: "War profits," says Greenpeace

A Greenpeace study reveals that between March 1 and October 19, oil companies in the EU made €35.9 billion in excess profits, with Belgium accounting for €1.26 billion. Greenpeace attributes these profits to geopolitical tensions, labeling them as 'war profits.' The organization urges the EU and Belgium to implement a tax on these excess earnings. Belgium ranks fourth in the EU for excess profits per liter of fuel, with significant margins on diesel and gasoline. Greenpeace advocates for a permanent 'polluter pays' tax to support families affected by the energy crisis, while the European Commission allows member states to decide on such measures individually.
