Prosecution continues against 7 officers for the death of 32-year-old detainee in 2023
The Public Prosecution Service will prosecute seven police officers for their involvement in the death of a detainee in 2023. The 32-year-old victim died after being tasered and restrained during his arrest. An investigation concluded that the officers violated their use of force guidelines, leading to the detainee's death. The incident began when officers responded to a traffic incident involving the suspect, who failed to comply with their instructions. Additional officers arrived to assist, and the suspect was restrained on his stomach. An eighth officer, who was in training, was not charged as he followed orders from senior colleagues. The detainee became unwell and later died in the hospital. The case will be heard in a special court in Utrecht that deals with law enforcement personnel.
