Independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta stops under pressure from authorities
The independent Russian newspaper Novaja Gazeta is ceasing operations due to pressure from authorities, as announced by editor Sergej Sokolov. Established in 1993, it was one of the last critical voices against the Kremlin. The paper's license was revoked in September 2022, and it faced increasing repression following the Ukraine invasion. Some staff continue under the name Novaja Gazeta Europe from abroad. The organization Reporters Without Borders urged Russia to stop the legal harassment of its journalists. Founder Dmitri Muratov, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has advocated for press freedom.
