Research on migration deal between Italy and Albania wins Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism

The Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism is awarded this year for an investigation into the Italy-Albania migration deal. The research, conducted by Maite Vermeulen and Giacomo Zandonini, reveals how migrants heading to Italy are redirected to Albania for expedited asylum processing. Vermeulen highlighted the secrecy surrounding the deal, which is seen as a potential model for future EU migration policy. The prize, established in 2021, honors the late Maltese journalist and recognizes outstanding reporting that upholds EU values. The jury selected the winner from ten finalists, including Belgian journalist Andy Vermaut.
