NGOs denounce persecution of religious groups in Nicaragua

Civil society organizations have reported increasing repression of religious freedom in Nicaragua, accusing the government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo of targeting religious leaders. During a hearing at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Marylaura Acuña from Cejil highlighted arbitrary detentions, forced disappearances, and the revocation of legal status for religious entities. The government has intensified control over civil society since the 2018 protests, leading to significant casualties. Acuña noted that restrictions on religious freedom manifest through attacks on churches and confiscation of religious properties. Exiled Dominican priest Rafael Aragón criticized the government's superficial tolerance of some religious events as a facade to appease international scrutiny. He emphasized the presence of police and paramilitary groups during religious celebrations to limit public participation and promote a secular culture.
