Unrest in the tennis world over the future of doubles: 'It is code dark red'
Doubles specialist Sem Verbeek has initiated an open letter to the ATP, expressing concerns over plans to reduce doubles prize money and participation. The letter has garnered support from 138 active doubles players, 28 former players, and 23 national federations. Verbeek warns that these changes could jeopardize the future of doubles in tennis. The ATP's proposal includes cutting doubles prize money from 20% to 10% and limiting participation in Masters tournaments. Former player Paul Haarhuis acknowledges the need for ATP reforms but insists they should involve doubles players. Both Verbeek and Haarhuis stress the importance of doubles in maintaining a full tournament schedule and nurturing future talent.
