UN condemns acts of violence in protests across Europe
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned recent violence during protests across Europe, urging for peaceful demonstrations and dialogue with protesters. Volker Türk expressed concern over potential excessive force used against demonstrators in countries like Albania, Belgium, France, Italy, and Portugal. He emphasized the right to peaceful assembly and called on states to address legitimate concerns regarding housing, education, and rising living costs. Türk also highlighted the need for security forces to act lawfully and proportionately, and for any misuse of force to be investigated thoroughly. He condemned those exploiting protests for violence and vandalism, insisting on individual accountability.
