Again fewer home loans taken out, fixed rate remains the most popular
In Belgium, mortgage loans decreased by over 8% in Q3 compared to last year, continuing a trend from earlier quarters. Approximately 48,300 loans were issued, totaling around €9.6 billion. Renovation loans saw the largest drop at 17.6%, while new construction loans increased by 4%. Febelfin notes that the decline is relative to a strong 2025, when credit issuance surged due to reduced registration fees in Wallonia. Despite the decrease, the number of new loan applications rose, indicating potential recovery. Mortgage rates have also increased, ranging from 3.53% to 4.69%, with most borrowers opting for fixed rates.
