Standing up against sexism earns men more respect than they think
A significant majority of Dutch men disapprove of sexual remarks about women, yet many remain silent when such comments arise. Research by Ipsos I&O reveals that while nearly 80% of men respect those who speak out against inappropriate comments, 58% admit to sometimes letting remarks pass or laughing along. Mischa Dekker from Leiden University notes that men often seek peer approval, fearing social repercussions for challenging such behavior. The study indicates that most men believe addressing inappropriate behavior can help reduce it, with many willing to support friends who are confronted. The government has launched a follow-up campaign to encourage men to speak out against sexual misconduct, highlighting that most men share their disapproval.
