Order considers "historic step" monitoring of pregnancy by specialist nurses
The Order of Nurses in Portugal hailed the approval of a new model for monitoring low-risk pregnancies by specialist nurses as a historic step. This initiative aims to enhance access to maternal healthcare, allowing for timely consultations and regular follow-ups for pregnant women. The Order's president, Luís Filipe Barreira, emphasized the political courage of Health Minister Ana Paula Martins in implementing this change, which recognizes the qualifications and autonomy of specialist nurses. The new regulations enable these nurses to oversee pregnancy monitoring, assess gestational risks, and coordinate with general practitioners and obstetric services. A monitoring committee will be established to ensure effective implementation and support for the specialists involved. The model will be evaluated after 12 months to assess its impact on women's access to healthcare.
