György Matolcsy has been detained

György Matolcsy, former central bank governor, was taken into custody on Wednesday morning due to allegations of economic fraud and misuse of private documents. His lawyer stated that he is suspected of causing significant financial harm. The Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office is conducting operations at multiple locations, with further details expected later in the day. The investigation stems from the mismanagement of public funds by foundations linked to Matolcsy's leadership at the National Bank of Hungary, which reportedly involved the disappearance of substantial amounts of money. Although the investigation began this year, concerns about the foundations have been raised since the 2010s, leading to the establishment of a parliamentary committee to identify responsible parties. The State Audit Office has also reported irregularities related to the central bank and its foundations.
