Russia releases 74-year-old American man who, according to the Russians, fought on the side of the Ukrainians
Russia has announced the release of Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old American citizen imprisoned for allegedly fighting alongside Ukrainian forces. Hubbard has been in custody for two years after being sentenced in 2024. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Russia to negotiate his release, expressing gratitude on behalf of Donald Trump. Hubbard, originally from Michigan, moved to Ukraine in 2014 and joined the Ukrainian army during the 2022 invasion, reportedly earning $1,000 a month. He was captured by Russian forces in April 2022 after serving as a mercenary.
