A Hungarian researcher discovered five previously unknown animal species
Five new land snail species have been described by taxonomist Barna Páll-Gergely from the Agricultural Research Center. Three of these species date back over 100 years to the Abor Expedition, a significant British military and geographical campaign in northeastern India from 1911 to 1912. The expedition aimed to retaliate against the killing of a British official and involved surveying unexplored areas of the Eastern Himalayas. In 2022, Indian scientists and filmmakers conducted fieldwork in the same region to gather scientific data and unknown species. The newly described species include Metalycaeus adiorum, named after the Adi tribe, and two others named after naturalists Stanley Kemp and Edmund Gittenberger. The publication also describes two additional species found in the collection of the National Zoological Museum in Beijing, collected in Tibet during the 1980s.
