Latvia takes over the presidency of the Security Council. Ukraine is the number 1 topic

Latvia aims to keep the Russian war against Ukraine a priority in the UN Security Council, countering Russian propaganda and explaining its imperialist goals. Latvia, a non-permanent member for 2026-2027, will lead discussions during its presidency. The Latvian Foreign Ministry emphasizes strengthening Latvia's security and exposing Russian disinformation. Since the beginning of the year, the Security Council has held 16 formal meetings on Ukraine, mostly initiated by Latvia and its European partners, addressing issues like the situation on the front and violations of prisoner rights. The Security Council consists of 15 countries, with five permanent members holding veto power.
