Public heritage, public interest
On October 6, the Lisbon Municipal Assembly discussed a recommendation from the Liberal Initiative regarding the use of vacant public properties. The proposal, while well-intentioned, lacked clarity and economic justification. The state owns significant real estate, including underutilized buildings, but the extent of this ownership remains unclear. The recommendation focused on identifying properties and municipal negotiations without considering private sector involvement. The article argues that public ownership does not inherently serve the public interest and suggests that selling properties to private entities could still fulfill social utility. It emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to housing solutions, combining public and private efforts.
