Immediate nationwide confinement and shielding obligation after three bird flu outbreaks in a short time

A nationwide obligation to keep poultry indoors has been implemented due to three recent outbreaks of avian influenza in the Netherlands. The measure, initiated by Secretary of State Silvio Erkens, aims to mitigate the risk of further infections. The outbreaks were confirmed in Lutjegast, Middelie, and Grootegast over three days. The decision is also influenced by similar cases in other European countries and the presence of infected wild birds. Keeping poultry indoors reduces contact with potentially infected wild birds, which is crucial as migratory birds return, increasing the risk of virus spread. Hobby poultry owners are required to shield their birds from wild ones.
