Peru archives process on forced sterilizations

The Peruvian Public Ministry has archived a case regarding the forced sterilization of thousands of indigenous women during Alberto Fujimori's presidency, citing the statute of limitations. This decision is based on a 2024 law that prevents events prior to July 2002 from being classified as war crimes or crimes against humanity. The case involved complaints from 4,172 women who reported severe injuries from sterilization procedures, which allegedly resulted in five deaths. The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women stated that these actions could be considered crimes against humanity. Activists expressed outrage over the decision and plan to appeal for a review.
