Peru archives case on forced sterilizations during Alberto Fujimori's presidency
The Peruvian Public Ministry has archived a case regarding forced sterilizations of indigenous women during Alberto Fujimori's presidency, citing the statute of limitations. This decision affects complaints from 4,172 women who reported severe injuries from sterilization procedures, which allegedly resulted in five deaths. The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women has suggested that these actions could be classified as crimes against humanity. The decision has sparked outrage among activists, who plan to appeal for a review. The case benefits 52 suspects, including former health ministers from Fujimori's administration. Critics are urging the Ministry to reconsider, especially following a ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights that held Peru responsible for a related death in 1997.
