Peru archives case on forced sterilizations during Alberto Fujimori's presidency
The Peruvian Public Ministry has archived a case regarding forced sterilizations of indigenous women during Alberto Fujimori's presidency, citing the statute of limitations. This decision affects complaints from 4,172 women who reported severe injuries from sterilization procedures, which allegedly resulted in five deaths. The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women has labeled these actions as potential crimes against humanity. The decision has sparked outrage among activists, prompting calls for a review. It benefits 52 suspects, including former health ministers from Fujimori's administration. Fujimori, who was convicted of crimes against humanity, passed away in 2024 after being pardoned in 2018.
