Peru. Heavy rains are breaking records, and the rainy season is just getting started
Northern Peru is experiencing unprecedented rainfall, with over 110 liters per square meter recorded in Zarumilla, significantly higher than the usual November average. This extreme weather is attributed to the ongoing El Niño phenomenon. The heavy rains have caused rivers to overflow, flooding streets and homes, affecting around 700 people. Local authorities have been criticized for failing to build protective barriers despite previous promises. In response to the situation, the Ministry of Health plans to convert a stadium in Lima into a field hospital to assist those affected. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue at least until Thursday, impacting other South American countries as well.
