The first white-throated hornbill was born in a Polish zoo
A young white-throated hornbill was born at the Wrocław Zoo, marking the first successful breeding of this endangered species in Polish zoological history. The zoo has housed these birds since 1986, but previous breeding attempts were unsuccessful. The breakthrough came after introducing a new male from Austria, leading to successful mating. The female, Kora, sealed herself in a nesting box in July, using fruit remnants and clay, with the male providing food through a small opening. The chick hatched in early August and stayed with its mother for three months before joining its parents in the aviary. The white-throated hornbill is native to lowland rainforests in southern Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, and is classified as endangered due to habitat loss.
