The first such case. A patient infected with the Shamonda virus has died.

French health authorities reported the first human case of the Shamonda virus, which resulted in the patient's death. They assured that there is currently no threat to public health. Previously, it was believed that this virus did not transmit to humans. The patient likely contracted the virus in eastern France, where it circulated among animals during spring and summer. Shamonda virus is an orthobunyavirus primarily affecting livestock, especially cattle, and is transmitted by insects, mainly flies. It was first identified in Nigeria in the mid-1960s and has been sporadically detected in animals in Africa and Japan, with recent spread in several European countries.
