Pilots in Europe: 1/4 admitted to having microsleeps in the cockpit
A significant number of European airline pilots experience fatigue, with 76.8% reporting at least one episode of microsleep. A study revealed persistent issues in fatigue management, including insufficient rest periods and pressure to extend service hours. Many pilots, including 29.1% in Portugal, continue flying despite feeling unfit, fearing professional repercussions. The report highlights that fatigue can impair alertness and decision-making, with over half of pilots admitting to flying while fatigued. The European Cockpit Association calls for better regulations and communication systems to protect pilots from penalties when reporting fatigue.
