Child poverty: 322 thousand children at risk in Portugal

In Portugal, 322,000 children were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2025, with over 3,000 homeless in 2024. Despite a decrease from 380,000 in 2019, concerns remain. The country has a lower child poverty rate than the EU average, but issues like inadequate housing persist, affecting children's well-being. The European Child Guarantee aims to reduce child poverty by five million across the EU by 2030, with Portugal targeting 161,000. Sónia Almeida emphasized the need to address economic and social barriers to meet these goals, focusing on housing, mental health, and access to services.
