Tourist tax. Authorities gave the green light
Norwegian municipalities Tromso, Vaagan, and Stranda have received permission to impose a 3% tax on accommodation to address tourism-related costs. This new law aims to alleviate the financial burden on local residents caused by increased tourist traffic, which has led to overcrowded roads and insufficient public services. In 2025, Tromso recorded over 1.3 million tourist stays, while the Lofoten Islands welcomed more than 800,000 visitors. The tax revenue will be used for infrastructure improvements. Tromso faces significant financial challenges, including a deficit of nearly 300 million NOK, prompting state financial oversight. Geiranger, a UNESCO site, and the Lofoten Islands are popular tourist destinations known for their natural beauty.
