Polish city halts ties with Lviv amid dispute over UPA commemorations
On October 26, Przemysl's council voted to suspend ties with Lviv over plans to honor the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and its leader, Roman Shukhevych. This decision follows Lviv's declaration of 2024 as the Year of the UPA and Shukhevych, escalating tensions between Poland and Ukraine. The Lublin regional assembly also supported severing ties. Polish PM Donald Tusk criticized Lviv's actions as detrimental to Ukraine-Poland relations, while Ukraine's Foreign Ministry deemed them counterproductive. Sviatoslav Sheremeta from Lviv was banned from entering the Schengen area until 2031. The UPA is linked to historical massacres of Poles during WWII, complicating the narrative around Shukhevych.
