Politico: The EU is not offering Canada associated EU membership after all
EU member states have rejected the proposal to grant Canada associate membership status. Ursula von der Leyen suggested this idea in September, causing confusion as it had not been discussed with member states beforehand. The EU is now expected to offer Canada a commitment to closer cooperation instead. Several countries, including Germany and France, opposed the mention of associate membership in the declaration. Despite disagreements on terminology, Brussels remains committed to expanding partnership with Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the importance of the changes this partnership could bring to Canadians' lives, highlighting potential areas for deeper cooperation such as critical resources and defense capabilities.
