Portugal was the fifth country with the highest road mortality
In 2025, Portugal recorded 578 road fatalities, resulting in a mortality rate of 51 deaths per million inhabitants, making it the fifth highest in the EU. This represents a 6% decrease from 2024 and a 16% drop since 2019. The countries with higher rates include Latvia, Croatia, Romania, and Bulgaria. Overall, the EU saw 19,350 road deaths in 2025, a 3% decrease from the previous year. The European Commission emphasizes that while progress has been made, most member states are not on track to meet the EU's goal of halving road deaths by 2030. Older individuals are more frequently victims of road accidents, particularly in rural areas, with an estimated five serious injuries for every fatality.
