Practically trained individuals feel disadvantaged: 'Living in a different reality'

Research by the Social Planning Bureau reveals that while most Dutch people do not feel disadvantaged, a significant group does, particularly regarding housing and political representation. Those with vocational education often feel overlooked, especially concerning housing priorities for newcomers. In contrast, university-educated individuals perceive cultural diversity positively and feel well-represented politically. The sense of being disadvantaged is linked to socio-economic status and a lack of recognition in politics, leading to dissatisfaction. Experts suggest that increasing representation of vocationally educated individuals in politics and acknowledging their perspectives could help bridge the gap and restore trust in political institutions.
