Prehistoric cave paintings in Indonesia at risk from wildfires

Ancient cave paintings on Sulawesi are threatened by wildfires, which can accelerate their deterioration due to heat and smoke. Researchers warn that even without direct flames, temperature changes can harm the artworks. Soot accumulation may obscure the images, making them less recognizable. The oldest paintings on Sulawesi date back approximately 67,800 years, with significant discoveries made since the 1990s. Firefighters are actively combating the blazes, exacerbated by El Niño conditions that increase temperatures and reduce rainfall, putting these historical treasures at risk.
