First data from the Madeira Ocean expedition gives "encouraging signal" about the health of protected marine areas

Preliminary results from the Madeira Ocean expedition indicate positive outcomes for marine protected areas, showing increased biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Observations of juvenile groupers and larger fish suggest effective conservation measures. Vulnerable marine ecosystems were found at depths of up to 1000 meters, highlighting unexplored areas for future conservation efforts. The program aims to provide scientific data to support the protection of 30% of Madeira's marine areas by 2030. Positive findings include dense coral gardens and various species of rays classified as vulnerable or endangered. A scientific report will be published in early 2027, followed by another expedition to the Selvagens Islands.
