Producers point to a drop in chestnut production
Chestnut producers in Padrela, Valpaços, report an early harvest and reduced production due to heat and drought, but maintain good fruit quality. Artur Esteves, a local farmer, expects to harvest 50 to 60 tons, significantly lower than previous years. He notes rising costs and challenges from diseases affecting chestnut trees. Workers, including family members, are involved in the harvest, which started earlier this year. Other farmers also report decreased yields and high production costs. The Valpaços municipality warns about the Asian wasp's presence during the harvest. The region is known for its chestnut production, with a festival scheduled for early November.
